about

Moreso than any other song on the record, this is a confessional. It
began as a midnight rambling to myself, and within 10 minutes had became the first song I had ever written directly about my feelings. Because of this it was too important not to include.

It is a song about depression and the apathy that comes with it, but ultimately an optimistic one, it is about the support
someone needs to overcome their problems and the certainty that another will help them through whatever it is they face. It is about fresh starts.

The line "what's a little spilt blood if no-one's bleeding?" is especially important to me. It is incredibly easy to get caught up in the hurt and damage you have caused others and to let this guilt hold you back, but to understand that the past must ultimately be the past, and that to be a human is to forever be dealing with the repercussions of your actions is the only way to move forward.

lyrics

how many more nights
can I really hope to spend
in a bedroom in my mum's house
while the clock hits 4am
politics are easy
from an old computer chair
burn the state down to the ground
then build up from disrepair
but I'm just a number
living the way I do
another "who was that guy?" (uh, I might know him)
another fucking excuse
so I'll go check the mirror
don't know what I hope to see
but I'd be lying if I said
it wasn't someone else but me

but I won't let this, let this bring me down
a thousand miles from the shore, and pleading
callous? sure, but who's that fooling now?
what's a little spilt blood if no-one's bleeding?

I'm terrified of everything
of everything that's dead
I'm terrified that anything
I wanna say has been said
so teach me how to live
and I'll teach you how to die
and teach me how to leave this place
and I'll give it my best try
take my shaking hand
and walk me through the steps
of growing up or growing old
whichever you'd recommend
I can't promise much
but I can ensure my heart
if you need a friend
to help you find
the proper place to start again
